A Simplistic Review: Weapons (2025)

Maybe I’m not a very passionate guy, at least anymore. But I do have moments.

Watching Zach Cregger’s latest, ‘Weapons’ I was reminded that there is still fresh horror talent out in the world. I loved ‘Barbarian,’ and will defend it until my dying breath, but a lot of people hate it, mostly because they feel it falls into the typical ‘people-doing-dumb-things-and-those-dumb-people-now-need-to-die’ trope. Look, this isn’t ‘The Martian’ where smart people are doing smart things.

Yes, cliches are always going to be around, but to hate a film because of cliches, especially in the horror genre, is like hating a war movie because soldiers didn’t get out of the way of machine gun fire in time.

Keeping looking…

Look beyond the cliches; that’s where a movie will always win. Does it illicit a reaction, was it actually scary, did it unsettle you, were there scenes that burned into your mind where you will think about them for days, and most importantly; were you surprised and happy that you let yourself be surprised and not get bogged down in cliches and things that you hated?

But than I remember the most important thing about horror films is to point out the obvious thing that’s wrong with it and say that’s why you hate said film.

Sounds like a cliche…

That’s the end of my rant for ‘Barbarian,’ now go make a direct BEELINE to your local theater and go see ‘Weapons.’

Simply put; the less you know, the more you’re going to have a great time with ‘Weapons,’ It’s funny, depraved, spooky, creepy and hell, even a little sexy.

Along with ‘The Monkey’ and ‘Companion,’ ‘Weapons’ is one of my favorites of the year (so far) and should have enough legs to make a good chunk at the box office just from word of mouth.

Hey, maybe my passion IS back.
