A Simplistic Review I John Candy: I Like Me
*Review from the 56th Nashville Film Festival
For such a short, yet eventful life, the late John Candy sure did a lot of LIVING.
In a, at times, tear-jerking, yet schmaltzy documentary from director Colin Hanks and produced by Ryan Reynolds, ‘John Candy: I Like Me’ takes the time to celebrate the career of perhaps Canada’s greatest comedy export from his time at SCTV and his most famous work with John Hughes.
Hanks brings out the big guns; from his father, Tom, every living member of SCTV and of course the ever sardonic Bill Murray. The list goes on and on from Mel Brooks to Steve Martin. It’s a Murder’s Row of comedy paying tribute to their fallen friend.
Archival footage of Candy and his two children humanizes his struggle with being a people pleaser, a consummate professional, and sadly one of the comedy greats that left way too soon.
