A Simplistic Review I The Python Hunt
*Review from the 56th Nashville Film Festival in Nashville, TN
‘The Python Hunt’ is a hoot.
Being a native Miamian, I relate to the folks of Florida, or who you might call “Florida Man” or even “Florida Woman.” The memes are endless, the jokes are constant and director Xander Robin celebrates these CHARACTERS in a respectful way while also pointing out two important counterpoints.
‘Hunt’ is the story of an 10-day annual Python Hunt ‘sponsored’ by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission that may or may not be just a distraction from what is really haunting the Everglades; greedy business folks.
Yes, Burmese pythons have run amok in the Florida Everglades dating back over 30 year after the catastrophe of Hurricane Andrew that released animals from Zoo Miami (formerly Miami Metro Zoo), Parrott Jungle, and Monkey Jungle (yes, there were all real places that hold a special place in my heart).
The trouble continued when exotic snake collectors couldn’t take care of their pet snakes (namely Burmese Pythons) and released them into the swamps.
Robin follows the exploits or Toby, a self-described Florida Cracker who’s been tasked with help a woman named Ann catch and execute one of the snakes.
There is also Jimbo, an ex-Jersey Boy who sees beyond the Python Hunt and understands that there is more to the plight of the Everglades than just the snakes themselves.
A slice of Americana, ‘The Python Hunt’ is a jaunt that is certainly worth your time.
