A Simplistic Preview: Fantasia Festival 2025

Fantasia Festival 2025 July 16th - August 3rd

Back in 2020 we starting covering the Fantasia Festival in the midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic. Needless to say it’s been great to cover such a great film festival that continues to highlight the best there is to offer in genre films and beyond.

While it’s never easy to narrow down our preview article to a handful of films, we always do our best to show our audience what we’re excited about.

This year we have everything from Homeowner Associations from Hell, a dystopian Florida where gun laws are abolished (not too far off I’d say), middle-aged eGaming underdogs, and of course an adventure through a toilet.

Hold the Fort (USA 2025)

Never trust your HOA, especially during a Seasonal Equinox. In true siege movie fashion, ‘Hold the Fort’ looks like a classic in the making with parts ‘Evil Dead’ and the splatter-fest of ‘Dead Alive.’

I Live Here Now (USA 2025)

Surreal and hallucinogenic imagery in a seedy motel? Count us in. Oh, and filmed on good ole’ 35mm stock. Sounds like a winner.

The directorial debut of Julie Pacino (you can guess who she’s related to) looks lush and dream-like where nothing you see can be trusted.

Anything That Moves (USA 2025)

If you know anything about us here at Simplistic Reviews you know we love our sleaze. The sleazier the better we say!

‘Anything That Moves’ looks to subvert the serial killer film by offering a healthy dose of sex and comedy. Think of it as Brian de Palma meets Trey Parker and Matt Stone-era ‘Orgasmo.’

Flush (France 2025)

Trying to win your ex-girlfriend back can be a dangerous proposition; but it rarely ends with your head trapped in a toilet with a pocket full of stolen cocaine.

In the vein of Gaspar Noé and the sepia-soaked world of Jean-Pierre Jeunet, ‘Flush’ looks like it might be one of the weirdest films to be unleashed at this year’s festival.

Infinity Buffet (Canada 2025)

If you’re someone who can’t sleep and needs to be lulled to sleep by late night infomercials, the lunacy of ‘Buffet Infinity’ might be the film that gives you just what you need, or keeps you wide wake with anxiety.

Told through a series of commercials, what’s really going on in Westridge County between Jenny’s Sandwich Shop and Buffet Infinity?

Good Game (Hong Kong 2025)

Looking to take a break from the bizarre of Fantasia, ‘Good Game’ looks like just the film where you’ll want to root for the underdogs of team Happy Hour.

Switching in-and-out of reality and inside the game, ‘Game’ makes the most of the it’s concept and creates a stylized action-comedy with heart.

The School Duel (USA 2025)

Just to round out our picks, what kind of people would we be if we didn’t pick a dystopian film about good ‘ole Florida and our rights to bare arms, prayer super hard and of course shoot other people all in the name of freedom?

‘The School Duel,’ should be a cautionary tale, but alas, we’re almost there…

Stay tuned all festival long for our coverage on this films and so many more.
